another holiday

chloe-small.jpgAs a friend pointed out, this site is falling behind - it’s not Halloween anymore. In fact, we’ve already had another major holiday. Time is going too fast! Here are a few photos from our relaxing Thanksgiving vacation in Lancaster.

housewarming

blue-door.gifThis afternoon we had people from my side of the family over for snacks and tours of our house. It was really fun to have lots of family there! No one had been to our house before except my uncle Mark. Here are some pictures

two cat household

The barrier between the two cats has been opened. They mostly stay on “their side” of the house, but the line between their territories is starting to blur. Ashes and Chloe mostly ignore each other, but when they face off it is ears back batting-time. Luckily, the hissing has definitely subsided. We are told by the experts to be patient, so we will keep holding out hope that the two can be friends.

Meanwhile, progress on the house continues slowly. We have a blue front door and lots of new smoke detectors. Our long list is slowly dwindling.

I hope everyone has a great week!

meet ashes

ashes-small.gif

We have a new cat! Our friend Sallie needed a home for her cat, Ashes, so she brought Chloe’s new sister to our house on Friday night. Ashes is a gray calico who is very affectionate, but doesn’t like to be picked up. She and Chloe have been separated and so far have hissed at each other under the door. All of the cat literature we can find says to introduce two cats very slowly, so we’ll probably continue to keep them separate for awhile. But hopefully they’ll eventually reach a point where they can happily hang out! Some pics of the cats (plus a print I got at a garage sale this weekend…)

it’s a home

ourroomsmall.gifThis weekend we had two sets of visitors. My friend Becca spent the night on Friday and helped with a project in the kitchen. On Sunday, David’s family came over along with his Grammy Benner & Aunt Linda. Having guests was good motivation to get things in order. We’ve made major strides and I’m quite happy with where we are. Here are some pics!

settling in

I think all of our boxes are now upacked. A few pictures are even hung on the walls! The house is finally starting to feel like a place I would want to spend time. We’ll try to get a few more things done before next weekend when we have several guests, but overall, things have really come together. Hopefully we’ll post some pictures soon, but it’s really best in person (hint, hint).

The flowers are a housewarming gift from our neighbor, Carol. It’s nice to feel welcome.

the joys of unpacking

livingroom-small.jpgThe last few days have been action packed! (har har) David’s family drove down on Saturday morning to help us move and took three loads of stuff from our apartment to the house. Ever since then David and I have been unpacking, organizing and cleaning almost non-stop. It’s amazing how much there is to do and how long it takes! But every day we see major improvements. We now have clothes in a dresser and silverware in a drawer, so that feels like progress. Here are some picture of before, during and after. Can’t wait until all the boxes are gone!!

the last hurrah

cups-small.jpgThis weekend we had two big work crews helping us with the house. Saturday we had my mom, aunt, uncle & cousins (the Kauffmanns), my uncle Mark and Eric Kennel. Sunday we had my mom and the Dean & Nancy Brubaker family. We got a ton of work done and the house is finally starting to look homey. We’re hoping to have all of the painting (except the trim) done before we move in on Saturday. Oh yeah, and the floors are done, although I don’t have many good pictures of those - I’ll add some next weekend! Take a look at our progress.

blank canvas

mom-small.jpgMy mom arrived on Friday and helped us with the house this weekend! We did lots of unglamorous things like buying paint, spackeling, sanding, and more wallpaper removal. It was great to have her help. Right now the house looks like a blank canvas ready for color. Many of the walls are completely bare and some of the ceilngs are also bare since the popcorn ceilings were taken out. This Saturday and Sunday will be the last big hurrah before we move in - we’re hoping to get most of the walls painted! It’s an ambitious goal, so we might have to prioritize. But we’re going to have lots of helpers, including my mom who is staying through next Sunday. A few pictures here.

welcome to pa (& happy birthday)

markheiki-small.jpgMonday night we went over to the new home of my aunt, uncle and cousins: Heiki-Lara, Mark, James & Conrad Nyce. They now live in Telford, PA which is much more convenient for visiting than their previous home in Seattle, WA. We got to see their house, plus it was Heiki’s 40th birthday! My cousin Dara recently had another baby, Eden, who we saw for the first time, and her other kids Elleigh and Jonas are growing like crazy. It was fun to see lots extended family. Here for pictures.
