hawaii - part II

Time for pictures from week two.

beach-small.jpgKauai was definitely our favorite island. Fewer people, a little less touristy and lusher. We spent the first three days on the south side of the island at a B&B called Poipu Plantation (as recommended by David’s uncle and aunt, Lynn and Debbie). During this time we explored and hiked in Waimea canyon and relaxed on the beach nearby. David even found a game of ultimate frisbee with some students from Bethel College on choir tour!

The second half of the week we spent in Hanalai on the north shore, about a block away from the beach which is part of a gorgeous bay. And the best part of our trip was an amazing hike along the coastline. We hiked for two miles with water crashing far below and then turned inland for two miles to a pretty sweet waterfall. It felt like we were in a botanical gardens with lush sights and smells, but not too many bugs.

All in all it was a very relaxing and successful trip. Besides the weather and the hike mentioned above, my favorite thing was the sunsets. They were so lovely again and again.

hawaii

palm-small.jpgWe just got back from two weeks in Hawaii! We spent one week on Oahu and one on Kauai. In some ways, it felt like two different vacations. Hence, I’ve decided to start with the first week’s worth of pictures in order to spread the love and avoid writing the world’s longest post.

When David worked for Bearingpoint, he earned tons of Marriott points, which is how we paid for the flights and one week of Marriott lodging in Waikiki. So this was a trip we’d been looking forward to for awhile and deemed it a second honeymoon.

On Oahu, we spent some time in Waikiki exploring and relaxing, but we also rented a car for a few days and went to different places on the island, mainly the East and North sides. The North shore had some crazy waves to play in and there were beautiful beaches everywhere. We did a bit of hiking on the East side and snorkeling in the Southeast. I’ll try to post pictures of Kauai soon. For now, here is week one!

on socks

socks-small.jpgFor my Christmas present, I asked for a pair of socks from my sister Anika. She recently sent me the finished product - her first pair of knitted footwear! I was very impressed. They fit well and are warm and cozy for the winter. Here are some pictures of Anika modeling, plus one bonus pic.

obama rally & superbowl party

laura-and-chloe-small.jpgThis weekend was completely full. On Friday and Saturday we spent time with Adam Roth, a friend from Goshen who was stopping through. In his honor, we ate some Pat’s cheesesteaks - we are now truly Philadelphians.

On Sunday we went to a rally for Barack Obama in Wilmington, DE. The line was really long to get in - we later heard that 20,000 people were there. Even though he was far away, it was really neat to see him in person and feel the crowd respond to his inspiring words.

Finally, we had friends over for our annual Superbowl party. It’s always great to have an excuse to pig out on pizza and relax together. Here are some pics.

transformation

basement-small.jpgThis weekend we did a lot of work on the basement.  We coated most of the walls with two layers of Drylock (sealant primer) and then painted the floor, walls and ceilings with colors.  The colors looked really good on the computer, but in real life, they’re a little funky.  I’m a bit unsure how I feel about it.  But it’s definitely cleaner than it used to be and feels more like a real room.  Here are a few pictures.

Also, we found a home for Ashes!  A Temple graduate student contacted us through Craigslist and will provide a good home for her.  I think it will be an improvement for all involved.

yay for 3 day weekends!

It was so nice to have three days off in a row.  David went to Harrisonburg to visit family and friends.  I stayed in Philadelphia and enjoyed doing things here.  Then we had an extra day to catch up on things around the house.  Luxury!!

In other news, we are looking for a new home for Ashes.  She is very affectionate to us, but she doesn’t get along with Chloe and it doesn’t seem like it will improve.  I think she could be much happier somewhere else.  Let us know if you have any ideas!

updates

My friend Becca visited last week and in her honor, we placed the finishing touches on the guest room.  She and I performed in Comedy Sportz over the weekend and a ton of people we know came - it was great!  I also survived my first game as captain.

Upcoming events include lots of work on the basement before our Superbowl party.  When we finish, it will hopefully feel cozy and comfortable down there.  Yay for home improvements!

christmas in florida

cactus.jpgWe had the privilege of spending time with both of our families in Florida. The first half was in Orlando with my Roth family and the second half was with David’s family and grandmother in Winterhaven. It was nice to have some warm weather and great company! Check out the pictures.

housewarming II

ellen-small.pngToday we had some of the Brubaker clan over for a housewarming get together. David’s cousin Sara who lives in San Francisco surprised us by showing up as a guest as well! It was another good excuse to clean and finish some other little projects around the house. Click here for some pictures…

another holiday

chloe-small.jpgAs a friend pointed out, this site is falling behind - it’s not Halloween anymore. In fact, we’ve already had another major holiday. Time is going too fast! Here are a few photos from our relaxing Thanksgiving vacation in Lancaster.
